Hot Tubs in holiday cottages and holiday parks

Hot Tubs in Holiday Cottages or Holiday Park

Industry wide figures indicate revenue increase by 50% can be achieved by providing a holiday cottages with a Hot Tub. This information is relevant to any Holiday Property with a Hot Tub. This could be a Home, a Cottage, or a Lodge where there is a paying customer. Since the staycation boom in 2007 the use of Hot Tubs has become an extremely desirable feature for UK Holiday Cottages and on Rental Parks, search engines now have Hot Tubs has specific search criteria, subsequently, Holiday agents have recommended Hot Tub installs to increase bookings. Just like swimming pools used in business settings, we recommend that Hot Tubs are operated within the Health and Safety Executive; if you are not aware of this HSE Guide we recommend making yourself familiar with it and how it affects you

Are you aware of the Health and Safety Executive (HSG282) on the operation and management of Hot tubs?

The HSG282 covers the entire Hot Tub supply chain, from design to day-to-day management and operation. Below we have outlined how HSG282 will affect you as the owner of the Hot Tub in a business environment. A Hot Tub is a self-contain- a factory-built unit that is designed for sitting in, they can be used either indoor or outdoor. They are typically filled with treated water, maintained at a temperature above 30 °C, fitted with air jets, and aerated. They are generally designed for a small number of bathers where the water is not changed, drained, or cleaned after every use. Hot tubs are not for swimming in and do not have a balance tank. The guide is a code of practice on controlling the risks associated with a hot tub. Primarily the control of any infection that could be caught from the water and also including any hazards posed by the using the hot tub such as slippery floors.

Whilst following the Health and Safety Guidance 282 (HSE282) is not compulsory, every holiday house owner has a ‘general duty of care’ to assess hot tub risks and implement appropriate measures to ensure guests’ safety.

A summary of HSG282:

If you are already are running a business you are most likely already aware of risk assessment and like any other piece of business equipment you must make sure that an adequate risk assessment and maintenance has been carried out and implement. A Hot Tub is no different.

Risk Assessment:

Suitable Hot Tubs

Maintenance and Operation

Record Keeping

What should you do now?

Our first recommendation would be to carry out a risk assessment on your Hot Tub(s) in the business environment. In most cases, the Hot Tubs are already correctly maintained and operated, so no action is required. If action is required we would recommend the following steps: Is the Hot Tub compliant? These features include:

Inline Chemical Feeder,

Adequate filtration,

Correct circulation,

Maximum Bather Loads.

Are you doing frequent and adequate:

Routine Testing,

Routine Cleaning and Disinfection or

Shocking,

Water Changes,

Are you keeping sufficient records should be held for all water treatment and test results?

How can we help?
